I cannot agree with you more. Web design services definitely need a sit down discussion as there are various variables that needs discussion. I had the a similar experience but only worst when i responses to an email request. To find out later my web-design package pricing were recycled by my competitor. Never discuss pricing over the phone or even an email.

I agree, I used to do a lot of freelance work and ended up getting screwed and played around with in the beginning.

I’ve found over time that it’s much better for me to charge hourly. As long as I can give a good estimate to begin with, that resolves a lot of problems with the price. If they request more work, then they pay for the time.
