Default Shutting down a site ...

Don't worry, we're not shutting down

The problem is from time to time people find out they have more things in life to enjoy than keeping a site or perhaps other online projects worth the hassle.

Have you shut a site? Would you do it? What could make you do this?

You give me more ideas

About the upgrading thing ... I would close the site temporarily for HOURS only if I needed to work the DB and something similar. Still I wouldn't close it for days. I can prepare the new version offline or on a folder in the site directory and have it ready and after that only close the site for minutes or hours so that people won't be that affected.

I think every downtime: minutes, hours or days is detrimental for a site's traffic and success. I struggle to get visitors and members, the last thing I want in the world is for them to find a non working site

Sometimes i get fed up with my site (like at the min!) which last for aa week or two so i don't do any thing with it. I have lots of areas to develop but the key asspects are there! (the games!)

I wouldn't Ever shut it down when i am on three hosting! There is any point!

I have not shut down a site myself, but I have seen a few sites shutdown here and there.

I know one issue that people have when deciding to shut down a website is that they want the site to be remembered as one with quality. Because of this they would rather shut it down than leave it to someone else who might not keep it at the same level.

I've never had to shut a site down, but If I didn't have time for a site anymore I'd try to sell it to someone, or hand it over.

Well I'm planning on shutting down this one site because it's severely inactive and the people who ARE active on it... Well they're abrasive as hell. I don't need that type of community under my belt, and it's not worth switching root administrators for the fourth time...

I've merged a couple of forums into larger ones and recently shut down an unmanageable community information site which is being redesigned, re-branded and relaunched as a far more automated local business directory.

I've closed multiple sites in my time because me and my co-admin tend to just lose interest in it.

We got to the point where attempting to make a site just wasn't worth the hassle. So we stopped trying.
