phpbb 3 beta code - need some help

Hiya guys/gals

I'm doing a site and playing with the beta version on phpbb 3 and have hit a little stumbling block im hoping someone will know the answer to.

The main pages of the site are written as normal html and i want to put somewhere in one of my columns that there are xxx forum members, xxx are currently online you get the idea.

Anyone got any idea on the coding to achieve this as i'm in no way that familiar with phpbb coding so dont really know what im looking for.
