I think forums always have low numbers of posters compared to actual members. For some reason lots of people just prefer to lurk!

I have also noticed this. Usually, when I get to a nice forum I just register and start posting, still many people seem to be less "maniacs" as I am

It's finding these "maniacs" that's the problem!

I've found you can get huge amounts of traffic to your forum, but you need to attract the right sort of traffic. People who like forums.

The best way to do that is post on lots of other forums!

Indeed, the best traffic on forums comes from the forums themselves. So many people are scared of posting and being active, this is why we need to cater to the people who are already active and know how cool it is to post in forums

What does bug me is I go on sites dedicated to other forum administrators, you know the ones dojo , where everyone knows and discusses the best ways to promote your forums. Yet I still find forums that are participating in "exchange" and promotion systems who won't allow you to have a link in your signature!

I mean, that's just mean, basically. We're all in the same boat, I think they should have a little more understanding.

I even allow spammers on my site, not gratuitous ones spamming porn links everywhere, but I've had several people register and all they really want is to get their link out to people. I don't have a problem with that, if their site is worth seeing, and not just some crap that they're trying to sell, I'm happy to let them post a link and see what my regular members think of it.

Some places you go to, if that happened the admin act as if you've just tipped over their dead mothers urn!

Sometimes a serious `pruning` of inactive members (which may also include banned and spambots) can be worthwhile from time to time.

I don`t see a lot of point in grossly inflated figures, though I must admit the advertisers like to see lots of members if they are going to pay to promote their products on your forum.
